A wonderful estate in Kennebunk; a quick make-over that included refinishing the floors, building some pocket doors and installing them- oh and 12 mahogany cabinets, 4 of which have glass doors. Plus a few miscelaneous items...
The spaces where the bookcases will go were once trophy shelves for pets from the previous owner, gloriously lit with flourescent lights. So they had to go...
Next up is the fabrication of two mahogany pocket doors, actually out of oak plywood, but stained to match. I liked the grain of the plywood and wanted something a little more distinctive then a mahogany wood grain.
Drawings are instrumental in reducing mistakes and increasing efficiency...
Pretty simple, bisquit joint a bunch of 3/4 inch strips together, sandwich 1/2 inch oak panels and voila!
Face detail...
And the two doors with edge pulls mortised in.
Next, I very carefully cut the opening in the existing door jamb for the pocket door and then cut the back of the old trophy case wall- then it was a labor intensive process of cutting through plaster, metal lathe and seven 2x8's up to the backs of the door jamb.
Beautiful hand pulls were mortised into the doors after they were installed.
12 Bookcase units were constructed and then installed, the center units will have glass doors all made to sit flush with the side cabinet trim.
Glass door hardware and details..
Audio visual components will be hidden in this shelf/cabinet- grill and hardware details.
Finish details and the room in general...
The greatest light sconce....ever..
